Perangkat lunak ArcView sudah tidak dikembangkan lagi oleh ESRI dan untuk selanjutnya digantikan oleh ArcGIS sebagai penerusnya. Namun masih banyak praktisi Sistem Informasi Geografis yang masih menggunakan ArcView , salah satuny adalah ArcView 3.3, sebagai perangkat lunak utama dalam pekerjaan spasialnya. Kendala muncul seiring dengan perkembangan sistem operasi Windows yang telah sampai pada Windows 7. Banyak orang mulai beralih menggunakan Windows 7 sebagai sistem operasi utama pada perangkat komputernya.

Kendala muncul ketika banyak praktisi SIG yang berusaha melakukan instalasi ArcView 3.3 ada Windows 7. Proses instalasi ArcView GIS 3.3 terkadang berhasil diinstal namun tidak dapat dijalankan atau bahkan proses instalasi tidak dapat berjalan sama sekali. Hal ini mungkin disebabkan tidak sesuainya program Arcview 3.3 dengan Windows 7. Namun permasalahan tersebut bukanlah tanpa pemecahan sama sekali. Kita tetap dapat melakukan instalasi ArcView GIS 3.3 pada Windows 7 dengan langkah-langkah yang akan diuraikan dibawah ini.

Berikut ini adalah langkah instalasi perangkat lunak ArcView 3.3 pada sistem operasi Windows 7 :

1. Lakukan instalasi ArcView GIS 3.3 di komputer lain yang menggunakan sistem operasi Windows XP.
2. Instal Patch ArcView GIS untuk Windows XP, yang diperlukan untuk fix identify pada program ArcView.
3. Instal semua Extensi ArcView yang biasa anda pakai (misal : Image Analyst, 3D Analyst, Edit Tools, Network Analyst, dan lain sebagainya).
4. Copy folder ESRI pada komputer dengan Windows XP (yang secara default terletak di C:/ESRI) ke komputer yang menggunakan sistem operasi Windows Vista atau Windows 7, samakan direktorinya dengan yang di komputer dengan Windows XP (yang secara default berada di C:/ESRI).
5. Copy juga folder ESRI pada direktori C:/Program Files/Common Files/ESRI pada komputer Windows XP ke direktori yang sama pada komputer Windows Vista atau Windows 7.
6. Buka perintah Run pada komputer dengan Windows XP dan jalankan regedit (Start > Run > regedit > Enter).
7. Masuk ke HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > ESRI.
8. Simpan menjadi file baru Registry ESRI (Klik kanan folder ESRI > Export > Save).
9. Copykan file Registry ESRI yang tadi pada komputer dengan Windows Vista atau Windows 7.
10. Daftarkan Registry ArcView tersebut dengan melakukan klik 2x filenya.
11. Buka Folder Fonts di komputer Windows XP (Start > Control Panel > Fonts).
12. Copy semua fonts ke komputer Windows Vista atau Windows 7.
13. Blok semua font, klik kanan dan pilih instal.
14. Selesai, selamat menggunakan ArcView GIS di Windows Vista atau 7.

Kendala pada metode instalasi ArcView GIS versi 3.3 di Windows 7 ini adalah tidak tersedianya start menu yang memudahkan menjalankan aplikasi. Namun dapat diatasi dengan melakukan proses instalasi ulang dengan cara biasa. Sehingga file instalasi akan menimpa file hasil copyan. Berikut adalah langkah bagaimana melakukan instalasi ArcView 3.3 dengan prosedur biasa pada Windows 7 :

1. Klik kanan pada file setup ArcView 3.3 pilih Properties > Compatibility > Run This Program Compatibility Mode For : Windows XP (Service Pack 3) > Run This Program As An Administrator > Apply.
2. Langkah selanjutnya sama dengan proses instalasi pada umumnya.

Selamat apabila anda telah berhasil melakukan proses instalasi ArcView 3.3 pada Windows 7 dan menggunakannya.

Tips Studio Spasial - Windows 7 memang bukan operating system baru, namun bagi praktisi Sistem Informasi Geografis (SIG) saya yakin masih banyak yang menemui kesulitan ketika menggunakan sistem operasi windows 7 sebagai sistem operasi dasar dalam PC atau laptopnya. Banyak kendala ketika kita melakukan instalasi program-program GIS maupun ekstensi-ektensi program SIG yang bertebaran diluar sana. Misalnya ketika melakukan instalasi ArcGIS 9.3 dan update ArcGIS 9.3.1, instalasi XTools Pro 5.2, atau instalasi ERDAS 9.2.

Berikut ini adalah salah satu contoh error saat instalasi ekstensi ArcGIS XTools Pro 5.2 : Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP,type=”win32″,version=”8.0.50727.762″,publicKey Token=”1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”x86″‘. Setelah diperhatikan dan browsing sana-sini ternyata OS Windows 7 memiliki limit / pembatasan penulisan registry. Sehingga ketika kita melakukan instalasi sebuah program yang melakukan update atau penulisan registry melebihi jumlah yang diperbolehkan dalam setting registry maka instalasi program akan gagal. Untuk mengatasi Registry Size Limit tersebut maka dapat kita lakukan langkah berikut ini, namun sebelumnya uninstall terlebih dahulu program yang gagal anda instal :

1. Buka window perintah Run dari Start > All Programs > Accesories > Run. Window perintah Run dapat diakses juga dengan kombinasi Tombol Keyboard Windows + R.
2. Ketik Regedit untuk membuka Registry Editor.
3. Pilih Yes jika ada pertanyaan UAC (User Account Control).
4. Pilih HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
5. Pilih System.
6. Pilih CurrentControlSet.
7. Pilih Control.
8. Double Klik pada RegistrySizeLimit. Secara default nilainya adalah 5d00000 atau 97517568.
9. Isi dengan angka yang lebih besar seperti ffffffff atau 4250967296
10. Klik Ok.
11. Restart komputer.
12. Instal kembali program yang anda diperlukan.

Menggunakan langkah diatas maka masalah Registry Size Limit pada windows 7 sudah dapat teratasi.

There are steps you can take to fight global warming in your home and car. You do not have to wait for the government or big businesses to do something about it. It is better to take the initiative and do your part.

In your home, you can begin by changing your light bulbs. You do not have to do it all at once. Every time you change a bulb, though, you can replace the old incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent. Not only does this reduce greenhouse gases, it also saves you money in the long run.

It has always been wise to seal and insulate your home, just for comfort's sake. Now, it is even more important. You can stop your home from emitting greenhouse gases and contributing to global warming by doing this. If you have any doubts about where your home needs insulation, you can hire an energy auditor to help you decide.

You can reduce global warming by simply taking care of the cooling and heating equipment in your home. You can change filters and have the equipment cleaned. Most importantly of all, when the heater or air-conditioner needs to be replaced, get an efficient model that is big enough for your dwelling.

In fact, it makes sense to buy all your appliances with energy efficiency in mind. Energy Star is a rating system that is reserved for efficient products. Buying such products will help decrease global warming.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to help reduce global warming. Everyone can do it with little effort. You can also further the process by using products that are made from recycled materials.

You can help reduce global warming in your lawn, too. For one thing, you can use a push mower instead of a power mower. Since a push mower uses no energy but your own, this is a great savings. Even if you do use a power mower, you can still help.  Use a mower that catches the grass clippings so you can mulch them.

As far as transportation, you can do so much more than buying a green car. You can drive it sensibly, with no rapid starts for instance, to help prevent global warming. If you keep your car well-maintained, it will be beneficial, too. Things like changing your oil and keeping your car tuned up can make a big difference in global warming.

Surprisingly, poorly inflated tires can lead to global warming. This happens because tires must have the proper amount of air in them for the car to reach maximum fuel efficiency.  The less efficient your car is, the more it adds to global warming.

The best way to slow global warming by the way you use your car, is to make as few trips as possible. Walk when you can. When you have to drive, combine as many errands into one trip as possible.

If you fight global warming in your home and your car, you can make a difference. Some basic changes can be easily made. If everyone makes these simple changes, it can have a powerful impact on global warming.

April is Earth Month, a time for people to stop and think about how they can do their part to help the environment.

According to Environmental Defense, a leading nonprofit organization committed to protecting the environment, the United States is ranked the No. 1 global warming polluter. What can you do to help change that? Here are some small steps that you can take every day toward becoming a more conscious consumer:

• Buy in bulk. It's cheaper in the long run, and you buy more of the product and less of the packaging.
• Look at the businesses you buy from. Does your coffee shop recycle? Does your rental car agency have hybrids? Businesses take note of consumers' questions; your inquiry could be the one to tip the scale and make a change.
• Make an appointment for the Earth. At participating Aveda salons, a minimum of $1 will be directed to Aveda's Earth Month partners when customers make appointments for a haircut, style, massage or facial.
• Support your local farmers. Farmers' markets are where some of the healthiest and freshest food can be found. By supporting farmers in your own community, you're doing your own body good and cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions of food transportation.
• Recycle! Plastic comes from crude oil and paper comes from trees. By recycling just these two items in your household, you're helping to save two of the Earth's valuable resources and reducing your home's carbon dioxide emissions.
• Pay your bills online. It saves stamps, paper, fuel for mail transport and ultimately saves you money.
• Purchase thoughtful gifts. Aveda's limited edition Light the Way candle, for example, is made with certified organic rose geranium and helps support organic farms in South Africa. All proceeds from the candle will go to organizations working to save threatened and endangered species.
• Think "eco-fashion." A number of designers are now using clothing materials that go beyond organic cotton, such as biodegradable fabrics and fibers made of recycled plastics.
• Spread the word. If you find a "green" product or company that you like, tell your friends. Consumers can use their collective purchasing power to spearhead change.

Kabel UTP tersusun atas empat pasang kabel kecil didalamnya, dengan warna yang berbeda-beda. Keempat pasangan kabel UTP tersebut adalah :

• Pasangan 1 : Putih-Biru dan Biru,
• Pasangan 2 : Putih-Oranye dan Oranye,
• Pasangan 3 : Putih-Hijau dan Hijau,
• Pasangan 4 : Putih-Coklat dan Coklat.

Ada dua tipe pemasangan kabel UTP pada konektor RJ45, tergantung tujuan pemanfaatan kabel itu nantinya, yaitu tipe Straight Through dan Cross Over. Perbedaan kedua tipe tersebut adalah :

• Straight Through
  Pemasangan kedua ujung kabel UTP pada konektor RJ45 dilakukan berdasarkan urutan warna sebagai berikut :
  Pin 1 : Putih-Oranye,
  Pin 2 : Oranye,
  Pin 3 : Putih-Hijau,
  Pin 4 : Biru,
  Pin 5 : Putih-Biru,
  Pin 6 : Hijau,
  Pin 7 : Putih-Coklat,
  Pin 8 : Coklat,
  Tipe pemasangan seperti ini dipakai pada LAN Ethernet 10BaseT, untuk menghubungkan PC dengan HUB atau SWITCH, PC dengan outlet di dinding, dan atau dari HUB ke outlet di dinding.
• Cross Over
  Pemasangan salah satu ujung kabel UTP pada konektor RJ45 dilakukan sesuai cara pemasangan tipe Straight Through, sedangkan ujung kabel yang lain ke konektor RJ45 dilakukan berdasarkan urutan warna sebagai berikut :
  Pin 1 : Putih-Hijau,
  Pin 2 : Hijau,
  Pin 3 : Putih-Oranye,
  Pin 4 : Biru,
  Pin 5 : Putih-Biru,
  Pin 6 : Oranye,
  Pin 7 : Putih-Coklat,
  Pin 8 : Coklat,
  Pemasangan kabel tipe ini biasanya dilakukan untuk menghubungkan HUB/SWITCH dengan HUB/SWITCH, dan PC dengan PC.

Alat dan bahan yang dipergunakan dalam pemasangan ini adalah :

• Kabel UTP.
• Konektor RJ45.
• Crimping Tool.

Langkah keja pemasangan kabel UTP pada konektor RJ45 adalah sebagai berikut :

• Lepaskan selimut luar kabel UTP tanpa merusak empat pasang kabel didalamnya menggunakan crimping tool.
• Potong dengan rapi keempat pasang kabel sehingga hanya memiliki panjang setengah inci dari potongan selimut luar, agar kabel nantinya dapat terpasang dengan erat pada konektor RJ45.
• Buka klip pada konektor RJ45 lalu masukkan kabel-kabel tersebut ke dalam pin-pin didalamnya sesuai ketentuan tipe pemasangan.
• Eratkan kabel UTP dan konektor RJ45 dengan menggunakan crimping tool.
• Test koneksi kabel.

Pada saat ini mungkin sudah tidak menjadi masalah lagi melakukan instalasi ArcGIS 9.2 di Sistem Operasi Windows Vista. Selain karena memang sudah ada perbaikan, juga karena sudah dirilisnya ArGIS 9.3 oleh ESRI. Tulisan ini mencoba memberikan solusi bagi anda yang masih memiliki kesulitan dalam proses instalasi ArcGIS 9.2 pada platform Windows Vista.

Akar permasalahan sebenarnya bersumber pada tidak kompatibelnya License Manager, karena pada ArcGIS sendiri sudah kompatibel dengan OS tersebut. Kita beruntung masalah ini dapat diatasi dengan memperbaharui konfigurasi License Manager. Silakan mengikuti langkah-langkah dibawah ini : 

1. Install ArcGIS 9.2 License Manager seperti biasanya.
2. Setelah restart, ArcGIS License Manager tidak akan berfungsi. Untuk mengatasinya : remove ArcGIS License Manager Service dengan srvinstw.exe GUI dari Microsoft, sc command-line dari Microsoft, atau WinSIM GUI dari Frameworks. Ingat, hanya remove "service"nya saja.
3. Uninstall driver untuk hardware key (dongle) yang terpasang. Download driver hardware key terbaru dan install, kemudian lepas hardware key (dongle).
4. Pada kondisi hardware key tidak terpasang, instal ulang driver yang tadi didownload, dan instal saja usb / parallel drivernya. Setelah itu, pasang kembali hardware key.
5. Browse ke C:\Program Files\ESRI\License\arcgis9x dan ganti nama file lmgrd.exe, lmutils.exe dan lmtools.exe dengan nama lain atau ganti extensinya menjadi *.bak, misal : lmgrd.bak.
6. Download file FlexLM versi terbaru.
7. Ganti nama file hasil download menjadi lmgrd.exe, lmutils.exe dan lmtools.exe untuk mengganti file lama.
8. Buat file kosong berekstensi *.log di C:\Program Files\ESRI\License\arcgis9x, misal : flexlm.log.
9. Langkah selanjutnya adalah mengatur License Manager (dobel klik lmtools.exe – pada user dengan administrator akses). Masukkan kembali parameter dalam tab Config Services lmgrd.exe, license.lic/.dat, dan flexlm.log dapat ditemukan di C:\Program Files\ESRI\License\arcgis9x.
10. Beri tanda centang di box pilihan Services and Start Server at Power Up. Jangan lupa untuk Save Services.
11. Setelah semua selesai, restart komputer anda.
12. Setelah restart, atur kembali ArcGIS License anda menggunakan Desktop Administrator jika ArcGIS tetap tidak dapat menemukan path dan source License Manager/Services.

Climate change and the environment is top of the global agenda today as the need to cut down on carbon emissions becomes increasingly apparent. As world leaders negotiate to come up with a plan to halt climate change and cut down on emissions, we can also play our part.

Reducing the amount of energy we use in our home, in our workplace and in our cars can have a significant affect on emissions. Not only that, it can save you money too. If everyone makes an effort in their lives, it can make a huge difference on a global scale. Here is some advice on how you can cut down on your energy usage.

In the home

• Switch to energy-saving light bulbs. They cost slightly more, but save up to ten times their price over their lifetime.
• When you are boiling water, or heating anything, only boil the amount you need. You do not need a kettle full of boiling water for one cup of tea.
• Switch off appliances when you are not using them to save money and energy. TVs, videos, stereos and computers left on standby can use use a lot of energy.
• Recycle everything that you can. We throw away our own weight in rubbish every month, but bottles, cans, paper, card, plastic and aluminium foil can all be reused or recycled which saves energy. For example, it takes the same amount of energy to make 20 cans from recycled material as it takes to make one can from scratch. Recycling will also save you money on refuse charges.
• If you live in a sunny area you could potentially meet all your energy means using solar panels.
• Turning down your thermostat by just three degrees will save you 10 per cent in energy costs. Also, make sure that your home is well insulated so that it keeps the heat in.
• When washing clothes and dishes make sure the appliances are full. Also, try using lukewarm water.
• Keep the lid on pots and pans when you are cooking.

In the office

• Where at all possible, store all documents in digital format on your computer or another storage device. If you must print something, use both sides of the page.
• There is no need to fly half way around the world for a meeting. Online audio and video conferencing has effectively cut out the need for face to face meetings and conferences. The amount of energy that can potentially be saved here is huge.
• Turn your computer off completely or at least put it to sleep when you are not using it. Computers still use a lot of energy when they are on screensaver mode.

In the car

• For shorter journeys, leave the car at home and use a bike instead. Bikes are a healthy, quick and enjoyable way to get around, and a great way to avoid congestion if you live in a big city.
• Experiment with car pooling to get to and from work. It will save you money and could get you to work faster.
• Join the hybrid revolution. Do you really need that gas guzzling SUV? Buy a hybrid and use a fraction of the energy for your journeys.
• Public transport is far more energy efficient than driving. Also, remember that air travel is a major polluter so use ground transport wherever possible.

In the shops

• Do not accept plastic bags from shops. Always bring your own reusable bags.
• Try to buy organic food that is grown locally. Organic food is farmed less intensively and usually requires less energy to produce. In addition, the fact that it is grown locally means a reduction in transport costs.
• Try to eat less meat. Livestock are a major source of greenhouse gases.

Water

While water isn't strictly energy, it is a finite resource that we need to preserve and take care of. Here are some tips on how to cut down on your water usage:

• Always use the shower instead of the bath.
• Never leave the tap running while brushing your teeth.
• Only use the dishwasher or washing machine with a full load.
• Try to install a system to use your waste water run-off to keep your garden watered. This will also encourage you to use non-harmful soaps and washing powders.
• Water your garden early in the morning or just before sunset.  This allows the water to be absorbed into the ground instead of evaporating in the hot sun if you water during the day.
• Water butts or large water containers are a good idea for the garden. Situate them under the edges of your roof so they receive run-off when it rains.

These are just a few of the simple, yet effective, ways that you can help cut down on energy usage and reduce your carbon footprint. Even if we all follow just a few of these steps it will make a big difference and save us money as well.
